Burnside Review Submissions

Submissions are now open. Please make sure to read this page carefully, as guidelines have recently changed.

Burnside Review accepts submissions of poetry and fiction. If you have something else that you think would be a perfect fit for our journal, please query the editor before submitting.

We like work that breaks the heart. That leaves us in a place that we don’t expect to be. We like the lyric. We like the narrative. We like when the two merge. We like whiskey. We like hourglass figures. We like crying over past mistakes. We like to be surprised. Surprise us. Read a past issue and try to to understand our tastes. At the least, please read the sample poems that we have linked from our prior issues.

Burnside Review has begun to charge a $3- fee with each submission. There are two reasons for this. Burnside Review is dedicated to being a print publication. With the rise in printing costs, we’re needing to adjust our revenue sources. We hope that if you feel that our journal is worthy of publishing your poetry, that a $3- fee will act as a small donation, helping to keep a small, independent press viable into the future. The second reason for the fee is that we’re going to begin paying all writers that appear in the issue $50-. As writers ourselves, we know how nice it is to be paid a little something for our hard work. We will send checks out along with contributor copies after the issue goes to print.

We only accept submissions through submishmash, our online submission manager. Work sent by any other means will not be read. Please go here to submit: Submit Poetry and Fiction Online

Please save all poems/stories in one file. Do not resubmit until yo have heard back from us.

Average response time is 1-4 months.

Simultaneous submissions are fine. No previously published work.

Payment comes in the form of $50-, plus one contributor’s copy. Burnside Review assumes the right to publish poems on their website as well as in the physical issue. All rights revert back to the author after printing.
